Chapter XII: Acknowledgment

The return trip to town was fairly quiet, to her surprise. With the death of Rowena, she expected many of those grunts to come pursuing her. She assumed that with Dante right behind her right when she killed Rowena; he was killing his own share of them, and thus, caught them off guard for their intended counterattack. On the bright side, his chasing of her had the benefit of getting the demons off her back, even if it was for just a short time.

When she returned to the pier south of town, Allison tied up the boat to the dock where she had found it, and pondered what she was going to do next. As tempting as it was to go after the next of Nara’s subordinates, a part of her was yearning to see Dante and affirm to him what she’d discovered about him. There was no sense in running from him any longer, nor was there any sense in denying her feelings.

She closed her eyes and held her hands out in front of her, focusing on her thoughts. In a matter of minutes, a small orb formed in her palms; she conveyed a message to Dante from within her psyche, transferring it to the orb. After receiving the memory orb from Rowena and going through Dante’s memories, she could decipher a similar ability to make a message based on her previous magic studies. Here, Dante would be the only one to see the orb when she left it, having conjured up another spell to keep it hidden from the eyes of both humans and demons, except for the recipient.

Her message set to receive, Allison took off from the pier, heading to a special place that she was very familiar with.

Serenity Park held the reputation of being among the most beautiful parks in the town. With its greenery and vast, luscious trees, it was ideal for families to gather around and play together. There were also swings, slides, sandboxes, and just about everything a child could enjoy. Many memories of the picnics she had with her family and Lady Susan and the times she played with Adam ran through her mind, which gave her a sense of calm. In a way, it was as if the park was so pure that not even demons could taint the scenery.

Using her memories as a guide, Allison went off to a specific area that had a lot of trees. Within the cover of those trees and the brush, it was the perfect place to have a private, intimate moment with your significant other. Standing near the trees, all she had to do was wait.

I’ll give him thirty minutes. If he doesn’t take up my offer in the message I left for him, I’ll move on to Nara’s next subordinate.

When Dante returned to town, he saw the boat that had been on the island not too long ago. However, what really stood out was the orb that was glowing by the same boat. He started wondering if it was another one of Rowena’s orbs, or if it was another orb from another one of the celestial demons in the group. Considering the orbs had yet to trigger anything negative, he placed his palm over the glowing sphere. When he touched it, the surrounding area turned white as it did before, but instead of seeing another memory, he was seeing Allison.

“Hey there, Dante,” she greeted with a sweet smile.

His ice-blue eyes widened at the sight of her.

“Allie?”

“Before you attempt to seize me into your arms, this is only a mirage of me forged from a spell known to my family.”

His heart dropped to the deepest pit of his stomach; he couldn’t recall the last time he had been this disappointed, and over a woman to boot.

“However, I would like to take a moment of your time. If you accept this invitation, meet me at Serenity Park, which is located four miles north of town. I used to frequent there a lot as a child with my family. I’ll be there waiting for you, but only for thirty minutes.”

Right then and there, the mirage of her disappeared, and he soon found himself back by the docks. Her invitation got him wondering what she had found out about him through the memories she saw, and whether she wanted to confirm anything in particular. Regardless of her reasons, there was something that he wanted to talk to her about, and if she was really willing to see him, it was his chance to keep her away from Vergil if he was lurking in the shadows. Shaking off the chill that tore through his spine, Dante began the journey to Serenity Park.

Her breath hitched in her throat when she caught the familiar figure of Dante in the moonlight as he walked through the greenery of the park. She had no reason to be surprised; he would have accepted any invitation from her if it meant chasing after her. When his eyes locked with hers, she mentally had to remind herself to stay calm and hope her racing heart would eventually steady.

She turned her back to him and glanced at him over her shoulder. She gestured with a flick of her head towards the trees before her and began walking towards them. Dante soon followed a few feet behind her, and when he finally made his way through the brush, he saw her standing in the middle of the perimeter. Her back was to him, and he had to imagine her gorgeous teal eyes as he stared at the wealth of long, chocolate hair that flowed down her back. Wondering what was on her mind, he approached her, slowly closing the distance between them with each step. Only when he was within a few feet of her did she finally speak.

“I’ve seen some of your childhood memories, and I know for a fact that you’ve seen a few of my own. You and your brother appeared to have a future ahead of you, with your mother guiding the both of you. I thought the picture of your mother said a lot, but seeing her through your memories really brought out the profile that I envisioned for her.

“I saw what happened to her, and that memory brought back my pain of losing my parents at the hands of those wretched demons.”

He paused in his walking at her words and wondered what all she saw.

“I was certain I had a slight understanding of the person you are now, but after seeing your memories and what happened to your mother, it all became clear to me. Her death shaped the respective paths that you and your brother took. Based on the information you told me about him during my stay at your shop, I’ve come up with a theory.”

The silver-haired hunter was sure he felt his heart stop dead in its tracks. She was so sharp and perceptive; how is it he missed this aspect of her in the short time that he knew her? Within that same span, she deciphered some aspects of him he didn’t want her to find out about just yet.

“What all do you know, Allie?”

He wanted to be as close to her as physically possible; his desire for her had reached the point of no return, and he wanted her more than anything in the world right now.

“It was hard for me to see it at first, even with the generations of references in my family library. However, after seeing your childhood memories, my mind became clear of my doubts. You and your brother are the sons of Sparda.”

She took a deep breath, and she was sure she held it for quite some time before letting it out.

“I just beg to wonder what all this means for me, especially considering I might be in too deep with you to turn back.”

Her statement intrigued him.

“How deep do you want to go, Allie?”

She let out a sigh as she thought his question over. Her heart was racing like a horse, and to her surprise and chagrin, naughty thoughts of the two of them played in her mind. Even though there was a part of her that wanted him, she also felt she had to be rational, since she still had a mission to do. Yet, despite being aware of that mission, Dante was always there in the back of her mind. Regardless of what happened next, it was as if the fates were attempting to grant her a moment with him in between.

With another breath, Allison slowly turned around to face him.

“I’m not really sure. Honestly, the mere thought scares me. Attempting to form some kind of intimate relationship with you may be the red paint that creates a bigger target on my back for the demons.”

“What? Am I not worth the risk of being a part of your life, Allie?”

The pain in his voice surprised her; it was not like the typical cocky attitude she knew when they first met. Hearing him speak in such a vulnerable tone brought out another side of him that caught her completely off guard.

“I’m not saying that you’re not worth it, Dante. It’s more a matter of my self-doubt holding me back. For someone of your caliber, I’m not even sure if I’m even worthy enough to even be yours. Hell, I’m nothing like the strippers you sleep with for release. You could have chosen any of them to be by your side, but you chose me. Why?”

Now it was his turn to be intrigued.

“Allie, you are nothing like those sluts. All those women want is sex and their payments from their clients. They’re not looking for anything else beyond that. The only potential exception was Maeve, yet she remained uninterested in me, no matter how hard I tried.

“In addition, all they were interested in was the rumors surrounding me in bed. You are the only woman who has ever rejected me outright upon our first meeting. I knew you were different, but after seeing some of your memories, it was a definite confirmation that you’re not like any of the girls I’ve been with.”

His words made absolute sense to her, and with her own confirmation that he was one of Sparda’s sons, it was almost as if it was fate that brought the two of them together. However, she had already lost her family to demons, and she had barely kept her friends safe while growing up. Was she willing to risk a romantic relationship, too?

She mentally scolded herself for asking herself such a ridiculous question when she already knew the answer. No matter how many times she pushed him away, and even if she fell off the grid, he would eventually find her. With a clearer understanding of his heart, she couldn’t deny the undeniable pull she felt toward him, a stark contrast to her past attempts at keeping him at arm’s length.

“I guess I’ll find out for sure what this all entails for the both of us.”

Was this her way of saying that she would finally stop pushing him away? By the look in her teal eyes, Dante confirmed it was, and he responded with a nod.

The sound of screaming in the distance cut the moment short.

“Demons! Run for your life!”

Through the brush, Allison caught a glow in the distance, and her eyes lit up at the sudden sense she felt.

“Is it another one of those celestial demons?” Dante asked.

“Yeah,” she replied with a nod. “Judging by the aura I just felt, that has to be Marcia. Her thirst for blood and inducing fear in humans is like that of a vampire. Consider her the female version of Dracula as a celestial demon. The grunts that follow her are the same way. If we don’t stop them, the town might wake up to the aftermath of a bloodbath.”

Dante quickly whipped out Ebony and Ivory. “Lead the way, Allie.”

With a nod, Allison pulled out one of her pistols and ran in the direction from which the feeling came.
